Recycling Efforts Really Pay Off

We're Turning Green

Yes, that’s right we are taking another step toward greater recycling. Although we have been recycling in the Church for some time, the Property Committee has purchased three recycling containers for unwanted paper. The containers will be located in the Lounge, Choir Room and the Salvation Army office. It is our goal to collect all unwanted bulletins, music sheets and scrap paper in the “Blue Containers” with the Recycle logo. Thank you for your help in making a greener Earth.

ENERGY SAVINGS IDEAS ABOUND AT SECOND REFORMED
 - We won't leave the light on for you -

Recently the Property committee completed replacing all of the original thermostats in the building with updated programmable units. The new thermostats are programmed to automatically set back the heat multiple times during the day when the building is empty. These thermostats have different schedules depending on the day of the week too. Automatically setting back the temperature, adds up to big savings (typically 10% or more) and will pay for themselves in less than a year.

This is just the latest project Property Committee has done to save energy and the associated on-going costs. We have installed new light switches in the bathrooms that turn the lights on only when someone is using the bathroom and off when they have left.

Art DeBlasio and Dennis Wilcox have replaced all of the light bulbs in the lounge with compact fluorescent light (CFC) bulbs. These bulbs pay for themselves in about six months. They use 75% less energy and last ten times longer than incandescent bulbs.

These ideas are not only good for our bottom line, they are good for the planet. They are low cost and can even be done in your home. If you would like more information, please talk to any member of the Property Committee.
